Medical Emergencies

Immediate Danger?

Call 112

Do not drive yourself if chest pain, severe bleeding, or unconsciousness involved.

Non-Life Threatening Issues

If you have a fever, minor injury, or ear infection, do NOT go straight to the ER.

Step 1: Call 116 117

Medical Helpline (Päivystysapu)
https://www.116117.fi/

This is a free nurse advice line open 24/7. They speak English. They will assess your condition and give you a specific time slot to visit the Health Center, saving you hours of waiting.

If you can't connect to 116 117, you can dial +358 40 4805 026 instead.

Finding a Pharmacy (Apteekki)

In Finland, supermarkets only sell vitamins and band-aids. For information on where to buy field supplies and which stores typically stock them, see the Supermarket Guide.

You cannot buy Ibuprofen, Paracetamol, or cough syrup at a grocery store.

You must go to an Apteekki. They are typically open Mon-Fri 9-18, and Sat 10-16. Sundays are often closed in smaller villages.

Health Centers (Terveyskeskus) and Hospitals (Sairaala)

Every municipality has a public Health Center. Costs are low for EU citizens (European Health Insurance Card needed) but waiting times to see a doctor in the emergency room can be long. Treatment is always provided according to the urgency of the medical need, not the order of arrival.
