The Santa Claus Express (Night Train)
train
Reality Check
It is not a "Polar Express" movie set. It is an efficient, compact public transport sleeper.
Cabins: Expectation vs Reality
The cabins are tiny. Approx 2m x 2m. If you bring two large suitcases, you will be stepping on them the entire trip.
Key Technical Details
- Upper Deck Cabins: Have an ensuite shower/toilet. The "shower" is essentially a nozzle over the toilet.
- Lower Deck Cabins: Shared bathrooms in the hallway.
- Wifi: Technically exists ("VR-Intercity"), but is essentially non-existent once you pass Oulu (the halfway point). Download movies beforehand and follow our device prep tips.
- Restaurant Car: Closes around 2 AM. Alcohol is sold, but you cannot drink your own alcohol in public areas.
Booking Strategy
Tickets are released in batches, usually 3-4 months in advance. Christmas dates sell out minutes after release. If you're weighing options, compare with flights and keep flight disruption contingency plans in mind.
Critical Advice
Don't try to save money by booking a seat instead of a cabin. 12 hours sitting upright in the dark is not how you want to start your holiday.
