Buses & Public Transport

Outside of Rovaniemi, "Public Transport" doesn't mean city buses; it means long-distance coaches connecting wilderness hubs.

Matkahuolto: The Bible of Buses

In Finland, Matkahuolto is the national bus network. Their website/app is the only place to find cross-country schedules (e.g., Rovaniemi to Levi, or Levi to Tromsø).

directions_bus Ticket Protocol

  • Buy online in advance for the "Promo" prices (€5 vs €40).
  • Yes, you can pay the driver with a card (No cash).
  • Drivers speak perfect English. Just tell them your stop.

Village Ski Buses

In resorts like Levi and Saariselkä, there are dedicated "Ski Buses" that circle the village every 30 minutes.

  • Cost: Usually €4 per trip or €20 for a week pass.
  • Winter Reality: Standing at a bus stop at -25°C for 20 minutes is a safety hazard. Check the live bus trackers before leaving your hotel room.

The Rovaniemi "City" Bus

Rovaniemi is the only town with a true city bus network (Linkkari). Bus #8 (Santa Claus Village) and #10 (Santa Park) are the most useful. Download the "Waltti" app to buy cheaper mobile tickets.
