The Mosquito Reality (Summer)

There are no mosquitoes in winter. But in July, they are the undisputed kings of the Arctic.

The Season of "Räkkä"

Räkkä refers to the peak insect season (late June to late July). The mosquitoes aren't dangerous — they don't carry malaria or Zika — but the sheer volume can be overwhelming for those unprepared.

Mosquito Defense

01

Buy Local Repellent

International brands rarely work. Buy OFF! or Thermacell inside Finland — available at most stores listed in our Supermarket Guide.

02

Dress Light (But Long)

Loose, light-colored clothing is harder for them to bite through and attract less heat.

03

Head Nets

Essential for hiking in July. They look ridiculous, but they save your sanity — pack them when you book hiking trips or consult the Clothing Calculator for packing guidance.

Where They Hide

Mosquitoes love stagnant water and shadows. If there is a breeze on top of a fell, there are zero mosquitoes. If you are in a dense forest near a lake at 6 PM, there are millions.

The Other Culprits

  • Mäkäräinen (Black Fly): Small flies that bite chunks rather than sting. They hate wind.
  • Paarma (Horse Fly): Large, loud, and painful. Avoid wearing dark colors near water.
